Marketing and economics degree

A marketing and economics degree involves both foundational and advanced knowledge of how marketing and economics work to influence the economic wellbeing of a company. It also means that you’ll have studied the fundamentals of marketing, including both product and brand positioning, as well as company marketing and strategy, and more advanced marketing. By the end of your degree, you’ll be capable of applying all of this knowledge in everyday marketing work.

The marketing and economics degree is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), with the following courses offered: Marketing Management and Strategic Marketing, Marketing Management, Marketing Research, Marketing Strategy, Marketing Communications, and Marketing Management.

Entry requirements

A marketing and economics degree requires three years of study, with the first two years consisting of compulsory courses. The final year of study is designed to give students the opportunity to specialise in one of the above marketing and economics courses. To be eligible for their chosen course, applicants must submit the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (or equivalent) for each year of study.
  • At least five years of full-time or part-time work experience in a marketing or communications role with a marketing organisation or a marketing firm.
  • A passing grade in an exit exam.
  • A statement from the institution confirming that they will accept the grades on the exit exam for entry into the course.
  • A letter stating your intention to undertake an honours degree in a marketing and economics subject.

To gain an understanding of marketing, you’ll need to study the fundamentals. There are a few courses we’d recommend for any entry-level marketing student, including:

To start your marketing and economics degree course, you’ll want to pick one of the above marketing and economics courses. These will help you to understand the foundations of marketing, as well as give you the opportunity to specialise in a marketing and economics subject.

You’ll also want to study marketing management. This course offers you more in-depth knowledge of marketing management, and gives you the opportunity to specialise and gain more experience in marketing. It will help you to develop your marketing skills and understand how marketing works in the workplace.

You may be familiar with marketing management from your day-to-day work, but there are still aspects of marketing that you don’t know! If you’re unsure about marketing management, we’d recommend you take one of the marketing management courses listed above rather than starting your marketing and economics degree.

Once you’ve chosen a marketing and economics course, you’ll start to build your foundation. You’ll learn the fundamentals of marketing and economics, including product and brand positioning, as well as company marketing and strategy. By the end of your degree, you’ll be able to apply all of this knowledge in everyday marketing work.

Assessment

The final two years of study will see you undertake a range of assessments. The assessment you’re most familiar with is the final exams. However, you may be asked to take a range of other assessments throughout your degree.

You’ll be assessed on your overall course quality, as determined by your grade in the final exam, as well as on your strengths and weaknesses. This will help you to determine your future career goals. The assessors will also ask you questions about your previous work experience, and help you to develop your personal statement.

You’ll need to submit your application to obtain your bachelor’s degree, and provide the relevant supporting documents. This will include your personal statement, a copy of your transcript, any additional supporting documents you may have, and an official statement from the institution confirming your admission.

After you’ve submitted your application, you’ll receive a notification from the institution indicating how they’ll be assessing your application.
